In 1977 George W. Huther, Jr. left the family business, Huther
Brothers Saw Manufacturing Company, to pursue a career in addiction
treatment. With the support of family and friends,
George, a person in recovery himself, founded Huther-Doyle Memorial Institute,
named in honor of his father and a dear friend.
Recognizing that he was an alcoholic and with the assistance
of, in his words, “the daughter of a dear friend,” George entered treatment in Minnesota in 1975, a
state he described as “the world leader in chemical dependency treatment.”
It was the Minnesota Model of family interventions and family treatment that
became the foundation for Huther-Doyle.
George became a credentialed counselor,
the agency was incorporated, and received state licensure. Huther-Doyle
has grown from a one-room office to an agency employing more than 60 staff. The
agency provides a full range of chemical dependency prevention education and
treatment services and is widely recognized for its innovative and successful
approach to providing early intervention in the treatment process.
Throughout his career, George was honored with many awards for
his pioneering contributions. In 1979, he received the Health Association
award for dedicated services and exceptional contributions to the agency and
the area; in 1986, the National Council on Alcoholism Helen Guthrie Award for
his work with teens; in 1993, the Nazareth Schools Lumina Lux
award for outstanding contributions; in that same year a Letter of
commendation from the chair of the New York Bar Association for helping
attorneys shed the bonds of dependency; and in 2001 the Association of
Addiction Professionals of New York State’s Lifetime Achievement award for
chemical dependency treatment for adolescents and youth.
George retired in 1999 and Mayor William Johnson declared
February 5, 1999 “George Huther Day” in Rochester.
Within a few months of retirement, George was back at Huther-Doyle, continuing
to pursue his passion in a part-time capacity. Until very recently, he
continued to do evaluations, train new staff, and occasionally conducting a
family intervention. His loss is deeply felt by the Huther-Doyle family
of thousands he helped to put the pieces of their lives back together.
