#GivingTuesdayNow is a new global day of giving and unity that will take place on May 5, 2020 – in addition to the regularly scheduled Dec 1, 2020 #GivingTuesday – as an emergency response to the unprecedented need caused by COVID-19.
Dear Friends,
Today's a special day.
Today has been designated Giving Tuesday - not replacing the traditional Giving Tuesday that is held December 1st, 2020 -but as an additional opportunity to help your community. And, to especially help those who have been on the front lines, addressing emergent needs for our community's residents. Huther Doyle is among the agencies that has been doing this......helping those with Substance Use Disorder, mental health concerns, those struggling with homelessness and those who worry about how they will fill the hungry bellies of their kiddos. We have been here, we are here today and we will continue to be here. In part, that's because of the generosity of our donors. Here's why I'm reaching out ......
A recent New York Post article quoted data from the National Bureau of Economic Research indicating that every 1 percent hike in the unemployment rate will likely result in a 3.3 percent increase in drug related overdose deaths! In the same article, a quote from University of Miami Health Economist Michael French confirms just as grim a concern - research shows there is a very strong link between unemployment and alcoholism. Experience here at Huther Doyle demonstrates that both are true for residents of Monroe County right now.
Yes, an increase in the need for our support all while New York State and our local community face unprecedented loss of sales tax and other revenue and unplanned expenses for COVID-19. The likelihood that Huther Doyle will experience budget cuts is very real - cuts between 10 and 50 percent have been discussed. And, it's also true, I can't offer you a fun day of 18 holes of golf or a breakfast featuring a celebrity speaker because both of our planned fundraisers have had to be cancelled.
At the same time, I can promise you every single dollar you donate will be used to help our community's most vulnerable. Every. Single. Dollar. Thanks in advance for considering a donation. I hope you will choose to be one of Huther's Heroes.
My best to you,
Kelly A. Reed
